Recreation-based economy & congress tourism
The municipality of Maastricht has identified the recreation-based economy as one of the spearheads of its economic policy.
The focus here in the first place is on people staying for more than one day and in the second place on people staying for only a day. The municipality has entered into an agreement with VVV Maastricht until 2012 for the latter to promote the city and provide visitors with information. In addition, the municipality wishes to develop the Maastricht-Valkenburg region, as the wellness sector offers opportunities there and recreational routes are an important component. In cooperation with VVV Maastricht, the municipality also aims to focus on attracting middle-aged and senior citizens on weekdays.
A specific policy spearhead is the business-oriented “MICE-market”: meetings, incentives, exhibitions and congresses. Together with other parties such as the MECC Congress Centre, the Maastricht Congress Bureau and the cooperative hotel platform in Maastricht (SAHOT), the municipality does its best to attract (inter)national congresses which contribute to overnight stays in the city and realisation of the economic spearheads.
Due to the long-term positive effects, the municipality also aims to offer participating partners an enjoyable stay during congresses. If a congress contributes to the economic goals (overnight stays and/or policy spearheads), the municipality can provide support to such a congress , up to and including 2009, in the form of financial or material (facilities) assistance (Large-Scale City Policy subsidy).
