European & Public Affairs
Within the municipality, we have two staff members for European & Public Affairs, Ton Wanders and Henrik Fokke, who are active in European coöperation, fundraising, and building and maintaining a strategic lobby for the city and region.
The fundraising activities aim to generate external sources of funding for realising large-scale investments and projects in the areas of the economy, society and regional development. In addition, they are also active in managing and implementing European programmes and projects.
Since 2000, millions of euros, primarily in the form of European subsidies, have been generated for the support and implementation of the strategic agenda of city projects. You can find more information on the websites of the various projects and programmes that have been realised.
Since 2006, the municipality of Maastricht has also had an office and reception space in Brussels. We use this as a base for working to further strengthen the Maastricht and South Limburg lobby under the header of the ‘Maastricht Region’ (Urban Network of South Limburg). The presence of the Urban Network of South Limburg is intended to more effectively position our international region in Brussels and in Europe. The office in Brussels was also established to offer a European platform for the concerned cities themselves as well as for other organisations in these cities.
